Hante Adventures "Step Out & Learn"

Our mission: Experiential education for young people, promoting the natural world and the betterment of human character.

Hante FranceThe desire for adventure and excitement, the intense search for ones true self, and the need to expand relationships beyond the walls of a family, are the characteristics of a teenager, and are the inspirations behind Hante Adventures.

Hante Adventures challenges teenagers to push, both mentally and physically, to reach a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them. Hante Adventures is not only about students going on a specific adventure.  It’s not only about students doing well on a service project.  While those types of trips are wonderful, they’re merely fragments of a much bigger concept.

We try to create trips that help the participants evolve mentally, emotionally, and physically.  We try develop programs that encourage and provoke thought, that allow mistakes to be made to promote growth, that push young people to reach new heights, and more.  By trekking through the wilderness, scaling a rock face, cycling across the plains, or paddling in some of the world's beautiful natural environments, young people build confidence, self-esteem, learn invaluable leadership skills, and form friendships that last a lifetime.

Hante Adventures offers culturally-based trips, adventure-based trips, and service-related trips.  Many of the trips offered involve a combination of each.  In 2008 Hante Adventures is offering a variety of trips.  Hante Belize:  An Eco-Educational Adventure is a spring break trip. The group will learn about the diversity of cultures in Belize.  They will learn more about the coral reef system there.  They will be helping with a number of different service projects.  And they will be learning more about global politics.

Hante Ecuador Spring Summits Expedition is an introduction to mountaineering trip for adults.  A six-person group will travel to Ecuador, link up with the local guides, and slowly progress to a potential summit of Cotopaxi at 19,388ft.  The group will participate in a 2-day clinic on glacial travel.  They will be based out of Quito, however, spending most of their days getting used to the high altitude of the Andes.  Other peaks the group can look forward to climbing are Cayambe, Iliniza Norte, and Pinchincha.  Hante West Virginia Rock Climbing Experience is a 2-week climbing extravaganza.  The group will spend their time in the New River Gorge area.  Other areas will include Summersville Lake and the Orange Oswald Wall.

Hante AustraliaThis trip requires no previous experience.  Our instructors will begin the course from "ground" level, going over the basics, teaching a solid foundation of skills, theories, and practices.  Hante Sailing the Puget Sound is a 2-week sailing trip beginning in Bellingham, Washington.  For the first 4 days of the trip the group will be land-based, learning some natural history of the area, learning about each and the different dynamics of the group, and beginning to work as a team.  On the fifth day of the course the group will board the 160ft. schooner and meet the crew.  During the course there will be opportunities to learn sailing techniques and terminology.  There will be opportunities to sea kayak in open waters, sit on the 120ft deck and discuss astronomy while star-gazing.  You'll be able to talk about past explorers like Ernest Shackleton, John Paul Jones, and more while eating a typical at-sea meal cooked right in the galley of the "Zodiac."

Hante Appalachian Adventure and Photo Shoot will take place on the 76 mile "Foothills Trail."  The Foothills Trail may be the most unsung, underused, and underrated long trail in the southeast.  It traverses the Cherokee Foothills of the Southern Appalachians in North and South Carolina, through state parks, national forests, and state-owned preserves.  During this 3-week adventure you will learn about the natural history of the Appalachians, about backcountry travel, but most importantly, you will be advancing your own skills in outdoor photography.  Hante Mexico is a service-related trip with a twist.  For 2-weeks the group will work on community service projects in one of the rural communities in Oaxaca.  Projects may include painting, cleaning, teaching, building, cooking, digging, etc.  After working hard on projects, making new friends, expanding their language skills, we set off on our next journey.  For the next 3 days we will make a new connection:  We will learn about the relationships between water, waves, and our bodies.  We're learning how to surf!  It's not just about learning how to surf:  It's really about the connection that you make when you're out there waiting for a wave; it's about the relationship between you and the water and how both flow together.  Surfing is an instrument that allows you to focus on personal goals.  Suring allows you to go places without ever leaving!

Hante Wyoming Wilderness Expedition is a 3-week expedition into the Wind River Range.  During the trip the group will learn the essentials of backcountry travel, trail etiquette, cooking, and navigation.  The group will hike past 1000ft walls of granite, spring-fed lakes, and see snow-capped peaks in every direction.  While traveling they will see places like the Cirque de Towers, Pinnacle Peak, Wind River Peak, Lizard Head, South Fork Lakes, and Temple Peak.  This is an experience that will change the hearts and minds of young people forever.

Hante AlaskaHante New Zealand is a month-long course.  The group will arrive in Auckland, New Zealand, and begin their travels to the south, stopping along the way to visit cultural museums, festivals, or to just take a break.  This trip is certainly a cultural trip but has many adventure based activities.  The group will be caving, climbing, skiing, trekking, learning about the Maori culture, etc.

Hante Adventures offers exciting and challenging adventures to youths ages 13-17.  Here's a testimonial from a parent expressing thanks:

"Aaron says that the [Appalachian Trail] was 'beyond awesome,' and both he and Lydia have spent many hours e-mailing friends and having LONG phone conversations to people in Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina, and elsewhere. We feel so fortunate to have a place that helps our children recognize that they can be part of a greater community. Please express to all these wonderful people who love and nurture our children over the summer that they are so much more than simply summer camp counselors. They will always be a part of the best part of our children’s lives."

The essence of Hante Adventures is in the motto:  "Step Out & Learn."  Step out of what?  Your comfort zone?  Your environment?  Step out of the house, the school, the chaos of routine?  Hante Adventures is an extension of the Eagle's Nest Camp summer program, and is based out of the Hannum Sun Lodge, on the Eagle's Nest campus in Western North Carolina.  Groups that meet in the Sun Lodge prior to their trip will have the opportunity to learn the food pack-out system, meet other group members early, learn about the history of the building, and see the learn more about the local topography.  Hante Adventures is its own separate program and generally operates off of the camp's site in the wilderness areas around the world.
