Go See Kenya is a new eco-tourism organisation offering volunteers the opportunity to work as part of a small community in the coastal village of Shimoni, Kenya.

As people are becoming increasingly aware of their impact on the environment, ecotourism is emerging as one of the fastest growing sectors in the holiday and travel market. Consumers increasingly look for more from their holiday or break and want to make a positive difference.

Go See Kenya’s response to this is to encourage people from all over the world to help the local Kenyan community in the coastal village of Shimoni, just 80km south of Mombasa. Volunteers will have the opportunity to contribute to the lives of locals by working on a programme involving three experiences: the marine based scheme involves monitoring and tagging the sea life including dolphins, whale sharks and hump-back whales; the forestry project focuses on a re-planting scheme and carrying out surveys of the primate and bird species in the local area, while the third element involves working with the local schools - volunteers will help with the building of new facilities, assist with teaching and implementing environmental projects involving the local kids. In as little as three weeks you can make, and see, a real difference!

At the weekend’s clients, ranging from professionals in need of a break to those who have recently retired, through to university students looking for a challenge, are also able to take time off to travel and explore other areas of Kenya.

Those who sign up to the projects will also be supporting Go See Kenya’s partnership charity, The Kenya Kesho Trust, whose aim is to assist and fund local children to go from primary level education to secondary level.

The experience promises to be rewarding, challenging and exciting as well as providing an opportunity to contribute to ‘grass root level’ projects that develop vital tools and raise awareness of sustainable conservation.

Ally Crichton, the UK project co-ordinator, comments, “…people are increasingly aware of their own impact on the environment and our holidays are an extension of this thinking. We are proud of the great work our clients will be getting involved in and are keen to share this with a wider audience so more people can benefit from a responsible and rewarding holiday experience.”
