Big Tree Country

This trip is an interesting combination of nature based and high octane activity. Wildoutdoors operate wildlife, walking and running activities in Perthshire and throughout Scotland and have an intimate knowledge of Big Tree Country within Highland Perthshire.

Perthshire is blessed with excellent wildlife including golden eagles, wildcats, pine marten and red deer which are abundant in autumn during the rutting season. During this trip you will have the opportunity to try out hill and trail running, which will be fully guided. This offers a more adventurous approach to exploring the countryside and wildlife, so you will need a reasonable level of running to enjoy this trip. We have also partnered with Splash and Nae Limits who offer white water rafting/mountain biking and canyoning activities to name a few, to get the best out of amazing and varied landscape.

Day 1 – Friday, 1st October: Wildoutdoors

Morning – Hill and trail running

Wildoutdoors running holidays tours offer an enjoyable training environment in which to explore new countryside with experienced guides and coaches. We will run over Birnam Hill and for the more adventurous Obney Hill as well.   There will be optional distances from 8km to 12km. Allow for 2 hours for this run plus recovery time and showers at the end. Our team includes Adrian Davis, international fell runner and sports masseur, and Louise Craig, masseur and runner with hopefully a guest appearance from Angela Mudge, ex-World Champion hill runner and sports masseur to give you the best advice and coaching.

Lunch at the local pub the Taybank.

Afternoon- Wildlife walking

This afternoon we will explore the uplands region of Perthshire in search of one of Scotland’s finest mammals, the red deer which at this time of the year is the rutting season and will be very active. There are two other species of deer roe and fallow, that occur locally and also rut although not at the same time as red deer but they will still be active. We will also be on the lookout for red squirrels who at this time of year will be actively seeking out nuts, the elusive otter, pine marten and wildcat.

Day 2 – Saturday, 2nd October: Splash – Rafting

This half day trip is about six miles in distance, and starts from the old market town of Aberfeldy. Here the River Tay winds lazily along the Tay valley, through rolling hills and stunning scenery. This is an area home to diverse wildlife, which is best seen from the river.

The paddle crew has ample opportunity to practice their newly learnt rafting skills before the river drops away and creates challenging rapids that flow down to Grandtully, where the trip ends.

Rapids such as ‘Zoom Flume’ and ‘The Washing Machine’ keep people on their toes! Grandtully rapid is the longest rapid on the river and provides one or two surprises for the unwary rafter.

Lunch break in Grantully.

Afternoon – Mountain biking

The Splashtracks bus locates customers high up to the top of a singletrack farm road this afternoon we will bike along high upland moors around a beautiful loch to where Queen Victoria had a retreat. Then it’s a nice descent on forestry roads passing many lochs, finishing in a woodland path heading back down towards Dunkeld. This track allows for plenty of scenic stops to take in the nature and beauty of highland Perthshire. Coffee/tea break by one of the many Lochans.

Day 3 – Sunday, 3rd October: Nae Limits

Morning Canyoning

Lower Bruar – Adrenalin Shot

Here’s something for everyone. If you have never experienced canyoning before then this won’t disappoint and if you’ve canyonned before you still won’t have experienced anything like this. Slides, scrambling, white water swims, jumps and also the ultimate ‘via ferrata’ cable traverse to the slide drop!

Lunch at House of Bruar.

Afternoon – Adventuretubing (with optional cliff jumping session):

Navigate your way through a scenic gorge, jump into lovely deep pools surrounded by smooth natural rock. We then take you on a gentle float down through the gorge where not many have gone before. A new experience not to be found anywhere else.

Finish Sunday and depart to Aviemore.

  • Thank you ATTA for a brilliant 2009 Adventure Travel World Summit in Quebec. While I learned and was inspired by the speakers and topics, the ability to interact and strategize with adventure travel partners in a perfect setting is instrumental. Because Backpacker's audience is such an avid group of travelers, we will not miss out on this event in the future!"
