Knoydart, The Last Great Wilderness

Hiking and Sea Kayaking

← Back to all Pre-Summit Adventures

Maximum adventurers: 10
Departure point: Glasgow
Drop off point: ATWS, Aviemore

The remote Knoydart Peninsula is often considered as one of the last wilderness regions in the UK. Despite being part of the mainland, wild and rugged Knoydart is only accessible by sea or a long hike through the mountains. Explore this special place in the company of Wilderness Scotland, who has been running trips to the Peninsula for the past 10 years.

Knoydart offers outstanding opportunities for wilderness hiking. The peninsula has just 80 residents and is hemmed in by mountains and the sea, sheltered from the outside world. It is an enchanting place which unfailingly captivates everyone who spends time there.

Back on the mainland, participants can experience some of the best sea kayaking in Scotland, exploring the Arisaig coastline. Scotland is fast-gaining a reputation as one of the world’s premier sea kayaking locations and this half day paddle (suitable for those without prior experience) is a perfect taster.

Day 1 – Friday, 1st October: Glasgow to Knoydart

  • Our journey commences in Glasgow, where your guide will collect you from either the city centre or airport. The journey to Mallaig via Fort William takes around 3.5 hours and we will be sure to stop en route to enjoy the dramatic scenery of Loch Lomond, Rannoch Moor, Glencoe and Glenfinnan.
  • In Mallaig, we transfer by boat to the remote peninsula of Knoydart (travel time: 30 mins).
  • After checking into the accommodation, we can enjoy a short hill ascent or coastal hike before dinner.

Day 2 - Saturday, 2nd October: Exploring the Knoydart Peninsula

  • Following a traditional highland breakfast, we will take a boat around to the north side of the Peninsula for a hike through the mountains.
  • Heading ashore at the remote Barrisdale bay, we have the option of either hiking through the mountains or over the region’s iconic peak, Ladhar Bheinn before returning to our accommodation around 1600.
  • Enjoy dinner and traditional music in the most remote pub in Britain!
