Connecting with Media at 2010 Adventure Travel World Summit

The following are tips and information to help you to try to Connect with Media and Journalists at the 2010 Adventure Travel World Summit and how to submit your own news for consideration in a special daily Summit edition of AdventureTravelNews.com. The daily edition, updated nightly, will be available throughout the conference (details below).

For this year’s Summit, you may learn which journalists are registered to attend the Summit at the bottom of the Meet the Press page – the ATTA will update this as additional journalists register. We are unable to share contact details for the journalists – per their request. Imagine being a journalist with 500+ delegates each trying to contact you during a four-day conference!

That said, we’ve put several systems in place to help you try to connect with journalists – and, to help you distribute your news at the Summit:

First, for delegates attending either/both of the PreSummit Adventures and Day of Adventures, keep an eye out, as you’re likely to have a journalist on the trip with you – it’s a fantastic time for networking with the writers.

  • Summit Connections: Upon registration, you were given a link for the delegate-only social networking site to help you reach out to people ahead of and during the Summit – some journalist profiles are already updated there. To make the most of this tool, be sure to create your account on Summit Connections, and complete your profile with your picture and organization details as well as your digital press kits, documents, and news fully linked. By doing so, when you connect with a journalist at the Summit, you can point them to your profile, news, etc., online!
    • Please note that Summit Connections is the best path you can take to make your press kits accessible to journalists. The ATTA works diligently to reduce paper waste throughout our Summit events. For this reason, no venue is provided for delegates to distribute printed material/press kits on-site. You may hand-carry your own and distribute to journalists on a one-to-one basis. The ATTA suggests using flash drives instead of printed materials. All delegates are respectfully requested to refrain from leaving brochures, leaflets, press kits and other printed matter throughout the conference center. All such materials will be collected and recycled immediately.
  • On-site, Delegate-to-Journalist Message Board: Visit the Kincraig Room for access to the Messages for Journalists board with post-it notes. You may also write messages on the back of your business cards (please clearly specify recipient) and tape them up. Messages will be collected several times by a volunteer team of 10 PR experts each day and efforts will be made to deliver to intended recipients as soon as possible. Please be sure to include your best on-site contact information: e.g., Name, Hotel/Room Number, Mobile phone, Email, and a brief query. Please note: No guarantees are made as to whether the journalist will receive your note and/or whether they will be able to accommodate your meeting request.
  • Meet the Press: Delegates will get the rare chance to hear from a four-person media panel, then move to a round-table format to discuss the current PR and travel journalist climate, discover new strategies and outlets, and meet with dozens of esteemed international Web, newsprint, TV, radio and magazine journalists. Registered journalists are invited to participate in these sessions (Wednesday, October 6th from 1:30-3:00 pm and Thursday October 7th from 9:00 -10:30 am).
  • Media in the AFAR Exchange: For the first time this year, there will be an hour (7:45 – 8:45 am, Tuesday, October 5th in the Four Seasons Restaurant) dedicated exclusively to impromptu meetings for Editorial Media and Suppliers. This is an opportunity exclusively for companies who have purchased AFAR Exchange spots.

Getting YOUR News into AdventureTravelNews During the Summit

The ATTA will be providing daily Summit updates on a special ‘Summit Edition’ page on AdventureTravelNews in a blog roll format. We’re working with the venue to use at least one flat screen monitor during the event that will show this page, as well as online. On the page we will include our Summit updates (including member updates and hard news submitted to us), but will also look to include recent tweets and Facebook posts in the right column of the page.

In order to submit news for consideration during the Summit, please email it to us, in ready format, at: atwsnews@adventuretravel.biz.

  • I appreciate the aspects of continuing education at the Summit - it feels like an intensive course. We are living and breathing our businesses every day so it it vitally important to make time to be away: to reflect, take stock and get new ideas. It was exciting and energising to hear so many inspirational speakers and participate with other delegates in the sharing of knowledge...everone was very approachable and I never feel excluded. The Summit is truly the United Nations of adventure travel!"
