Adventure tourism grows in popularity
These days, travelers want to experience something more
than the gated resort and the cruise ship buffet. They want
to go on a walking tour, climb a mountain and kayak down a
river—adventures that can make a vacation more meaningful.
"In travel, people are increasingly seeking the authentic
unique experiences that stretch the imagination and create
potent memories that last a lifetime," says Chris Doyle,
vice president of the Adventure Travel Trade Association
(ATTA). According to the organization, adventure travel is
the fastest growing segment of the leisure travel industry.

Thrill seeking takes on a new meaning
But what exactly is adventure travel? ....While
definitions abound, most include physical, cultural, and
nature-based travel. "The definition of adventure travel is
broader and softer," Shannon Stowell, president of the
U.S.-based Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA),
recently said. "Culture is playing a bigger role. The softer
part is growing."

Ladies only: 8 getaways for female travelers
An estimated 32 million single American women traveled
at least once last year, and about 3 in 10 traveled 5 times
or more in that year. In most households, women are the
primary trip planners and almost 40% of women over the age
of 35 don’t have a built-in travel partner. In fact, out of
the 34.8 million U.S. adults who have traveled solo in the
past three years, 47% are female. A 2006 survey released by
the Adventure Travel Trade Association reports that women
comprise 52% of adventure travelers.

Adventure.Travel
The Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) introduced
to adventure tour operators globally a new, consumer-facing
online directory for travelers interested in researching and
accessing trusted adventure tour operators. The
Adventure.Travel website features only pre-qualified ATTA
members and provides consumers with an in-depth directory of
physical, cultural and nature-based adventure travel tour
operators from around the globe, plus a host of trip
planning resources.

Rustic Resorts
Bringing opulence into the wilderness is hardly a new
concept, says Chris Doyle, director of the Adventure Travel
Trade Association. Safari expeditions traveling throughout
colonial Africa in the 1800s would set up portable resorts
with as many creature comforts as they could carry. "It's
the full English traditional experience that you saw 150
years ago," he says.

Adventure Tours Lighten Up
"There's more craving for education and learning --
which by default means softer activities," says Chris Doyle,
director of the Adventure Travel Trade Association. "It's
not so much a toning-down but an expansion of how consumers
themselves view adventure travel."

CALL OF THE WILD
Family travel is getting just a little bit frisky.
Adventure travel - traditionally
the domain of the young and the single - is becoming a
family affair. "More and more families, including
multi-generational families with grandparents, are seeking
adventure vacations," says Chris Doyle, director of the
Adventure Travel Trade Association...”
