Raffaele Di Biase is a naturalist guide with more than 10 years of experience leading expeditions from Galapagos to Antarctica. In 2009 he founded BirdsChile, a tour operator based in Puerto Varas that offers a wide range of birding and naturalist tours throughout Chile, Argentina. BirdsChile, in just a few years, became one of the most prestigious Chilean tour companies and a benchmark for the development of special interest experiences. Since the beginning, BirdsChile has been oriented towards contributing to conservation and has been supporting local communities, convinced that tourism can be one of the most powerful tools to enforce conservation and regeneration of natural and cultural heritage.
Raffaele is also actively involved in the industry: first as the president of the Local Tour Guide Association for 4 years and since 2017 as a member of the Turismo Chile board and the Corporación de Turismo of Puerto Varas. He is also the president of the recently created Association of Tour Operators and actively collaborates on different initiatives such as the ATTA’s Adventure Travel Guide Standards, as a member of the governance board, and as the Chilean director of the International Board of the South American Birdfair. He has been a leader in organizing the South American Bird Fair in Chile, in October of 2017. It will be the first time that the country hosts this important event, focused on conservation and bird watching tourism.
In 2016, BirdsChile was awarded as the most sustainable tour company in Chile and in 2017 it has received the National Sustainable Stamp (Sello S) with the maximum score, being the only tour operator of Chile to reach the level 3 certification. The company currently is also achieving the B Corporation Certification. Raffaele is also involved with his company in different conservation projects, the most recent one being in the town of Llanquihue, working as a volunteer in different programs to protect the wetlands and to help the development of sustainable tourism initiatives focusing on biodiversity experiences within these important areas. He is the author of the Field Guides of Birds of the Lake District and Patagonia and the Patagonia & Atacama Pocket Field Guide of Birds, Mammals and Flora. He has been a speaker at different national and international events and also collaborates with various magazines and newspapers on articles about special interest tourism.
Raffaele also works as a guide trainer and instructor for workshops and courses for guides and tour companies in Chile and abroad. In 2017 he was invited to be part of the Entrepreneurs Council of the University of San Sebastian Business School.
