After graduating in law from Aberdeen University, Stevie took a position as a Policy Advisor for the Scottish Government just after the creation of the Scottish Parliament in 1999. However, Stevie’s love of travel and adventure eventually led him out of the government and into the wilderness – in a good way! After spending time as a guide in Namibia with the youth development charity Raleigh International and then working as a freelance adventure guide in Scotland and South America, Stevie teamed up with Paul Easto at Wilderness Scotland in 2003.
From small beginnings, Wilderness Scotland has grown to establish a market leading reputation for high quality and innovative adventure experiences in the wild places of Scotland, England and Ireland. Over the years, Wilderness Scotland has won several major travel awards including being ranked No.1 in Europe by National Geographic in the Best Adventure Travel Companies on Earth. The company’s commitment to sustainable tourism and wilderness conservation has also contributed to its success and recognition, with Wilderness Scotland being named twice as the Best Green Tour Operator in the World Travel Awards and becoming a multiple winner in the World Travel Market Responsible Tourism Awards.
While focusing on Wilderness Scotland, Stevie also spent several years on the board of Wild Scotland (the national association of adventure operators in Scotland), including 2 years as Chairman. This led to involvement with a number of national industry panels, as well as presenter appearances for various organisations. Stevie is currently on the board of the Highlands & Islands Tourism Awards. As well as Wilderness Scotland, Stevie founded Edinburgh Mountain Film Festival in 2003 – an annual event which now attracts several thousand devotees each year. Stevie still directs this event in his so-called spare time.
Stevie has spent a lifetime in the Scottish Highlands and knows it better than most. He’s also travelled independently in over 40 countries across every continent (except Antarctica … he’s open to offers!). It was his love of adventure travel which led Stevie to this industry and, while he is generally office-based while at work, he still finds time to get out and explore his home patch of the Cairngorms National Park in Scotland on foot, by bike and on skis … whenever his young family allows him!
