Lake George is located in the southeast corner of the Adirondack Mountains, in the northeastern area of the United States in the state of New York. This beautiful, 32.2-mile long and narrow lake is nicknamed the Queen of American Lakes, and rightly so. It is situated on the historical path between the valleys of the Hudson and St. Lawrence Rivers.

History

Once called “Caldwell,” the city known today as Lake George may be the smallest town in Warren County, but it has a storied history. The shores of Lake George saw lots of action during the Seven Years War (the French and Indian War), and three forts were built here to take advantage of its strategic location. Lake George’s natural beauty has drawn in people and businesses for centuries, enticing its first tourists in the mid-1800s.

The Town

Though thousands of people visit Lake George every year, the town of Lake George is home to just over 3,500 residents. This walkable town teems with a Main Street, USA, vibe and is peppered with boardwalk favorites like mini golf courses and arcades. Its hometown charm is found on every street corner with mom-and- businesses and several locally owned shops and restaurants.

Broader Region – The Park

With 6 million acres of wilderness surrounding Lake George, Adirondack State Park boasts incredible opportunities for active outdoor adventure. Visitors seek out the park to hike on 2,000 miles of trails and kayak, canoe, raft, or stand-up paddleboard on more than 3,000 lakes and ponds, and 30,000 miles of rivers and streams running through the park. There’s road biking, mountain biking, rock climbing, birding, craft breweries, and so much more.
