What is the Adventure Travel World Summit (ATWS)?
The ATWS, or the Summit, is the preeminent event for adventure travel professionals to gather. Over the course of the multi-day event, delegates network with adventure-based tour operators and media from around the world, advance their professional development and knowledge of adventure travel trends, and help promote their company’s adventure product to the adventure travel industry’s influencers and decision makers. It is not a traditional trade show.
This year’s Summit is a four-day event that kicks off with a Day of Adventure, giving delegates the opportunity to casually connect and network with other delegates while exploring Hokkaido, Japan. The event days that follow are jam-packed with educational sessions, inspirational speakers, networking events, Marketplace (supplier tables at an additional cost to registration), MediaConnect, and entertainment.
Check out our Events page to view videos of previous Summit adventures, plenary sessions, and highlights.
What is the Save Your Spot option?
Save Your Spot is a non-refundable fee that secures your opportunity to purchase a full early registration ticket (by 31 March 2021) to attend the in-person Summit and registers you for the Virtual Summit. ATTA will host a Virtual Summit as a replacement to the in-person Summit if we can’t all meet in-person in Hokkaido.
The balance of your registration fee will be due 31 March 2021. Purchase of the in-person ticket will fully secure your spot at the in-person Summit. Your registration balance due will be based on the Early Registration rate.
After 31 March 2021, those that purchased the Save Your Spot option and have not paid the remaining balance for the full in-person ticket, risk losing their opportunity to join us in-person if the in-person tickets sell out. As long as in-person tickets remain available, anyone with a Save Your Spot registration may purchase the in-person ticket at the full registration rate ($1,899 Community & Professional Members or $1,499 Business Members) less the amount paid for the Save Your Spot option. We encourage you not to wait. Remaining tickets often sell out very quickly.
If you Save Your Spot and are unable to purchase the full ticket or are unable to attend in-person due to travel restrictions, then your Save Your Spot fee will automatically transfer to the Virtual Summit (details of a virtual or hybrid summit to come in early 2021).
What if the in-person event is postponed, cancelled, or my ability to attend is prohibited due to travel restrictions or other Force Majeure occurrence?
If the in-person Summit is postponed, cancelled, or your ability to attend is limited due to travel restrictions or other Force Majeure occurrence, ATTA will automatically apply a portion of your registration fee ($349 Community & Professional Members or $299 Business Members) to a Virtual Summit ticket. This portion of the registration fee is non-refundable and can not be retained as credit. The remaining amount of your paid registration will be applied as credit to your ATTA account for use at a future Summit or for other ATTA products or services.
Please visit our general Refund/Cancellation Policies page for more about Force Majeure, refunds, cancellation, or transfers to a co-worker.
What if I need to cancel or transfer my registration to a co-worker?
Your paid registration for entrance to our in-person Summit covers all four days of the Summit (20-23 September 2021) including:
Access to all ATWS educational and networking events
Listing in the online delegate directory
Scheduled Summit meals – three lunches
Access to ATTA event networking portal – the ATWS exclusive online community and networking app for desktop and mobile event management
The Day of Adventure – including transportation, an adventure activity, equipment (if needed), and lunch. Available on a first-come, first-served basis.
*A member registration is per person rather than per company. If your company is an ATTA Member, you may purchase the member-priced ticket at $1,499 USD, instead of $1,899 USD or at $1,299 USD, instead of $1,699 USD during our early registration period. There is no limit to how many registrations you can purchase for your company.
Offsetting your travel emission!
The travel sector contributes as much as 8 percent of all global carbon emissions. The ATTA values include a responsibility to minimize negative impacts and maximize the positive benefits to the environment in its business operations. As an organization that manages global events, the ATTA recognizes both the need to offset the impact on the environment, and the opportunity to lead through example of possible ways to do so.
The ATTA is committed to doing our part to mitigate the effects of delegate travel to our events. The organization has offset all its staff travel since 2018 through the purchase of certified carbon credits.
What is not included in the registration fee?
Marketplace Table – Marketplace is a one-day event. Sign-ups are on a first-come, first-served basis, to ATTA Business Members only.
Please note: Within the event agenda, there are numerous other opportunities to network, such as during the Day of Adventure, social events, and meals. As a delegate you have access to Summit Connections, an app and website, which allows you to start networking immediately. Additionally, the sessions are full of information to help you improve your business, and the MediaConnect networking session will enable you to meet editorial staff from many publications.
Lodging/Hotels – Japan will provide a list of nearby hotels which will be posted on the Traveler Information page.
Flights/Airfare – Flights to and from your destination are not included in the registration fee.
As we draw closer to the event, we will update delegates on Japan’s Covid-19 safety protocols.
Do I book my hotel accommodations through the ATTA?
No. Please book your own accommodations. Hotel suggestions are listed on the ATWS Traveler Information page.
What is the cancellation policy for accommodations?
Please check with the hotel you booked for its cancellation policy.
Are there any airline discounts?
No, not at this time.
Are volunteer opportunities available for ATWS?
Unfortunately, not at this time.
How many people from my company can attend?

How can I attend as a media delegate?
If you produce, publish, or sell a media product, we encourage you to attend the Summit as a regular delegate and immerse yourself in the adventure travel community while helping promote your company’s adventure product to the industry’s influencers and decision makers. There are a limited number of official media delegate badges available for selected international freelance journalists, on-staff writers and editors, and professional influencers/bloggers. Official media delegate badge holders are selected through an application process well in advance of the event. Official Media Applications will open January 2021. Half-day passes may be available for local television, radio, or newspaper representatives to access a local press conference and the event’s opening session. Contact [email protected].

ATWS – Marketplace Q&A
What is Marketplace like?
Marketplace is a small, intimate environment that connects suppliers and buyers. Similar to “speed dating” but with an emphasis on quality over quantity, your Marketplace experience will consist of a set amount of 12-minute meetings, providing a great atmosphere for introductions, learning about new opportunities, and engaging in product development discussions. Please note that full schedules are not guaranteed.
As a supplier, how can I secure quality Marketplace meetings?
Summit Connections is the first step to having a great Marketplace experience. Reaching out to buyers you wish to meet with prior to the appointment request process is the second step — the more you reach out in advance, the more meetings you will have on-site.
I didn’t receive all my requested appointments. Why?
We do our best to provide as many requested appointments as possible, but due to the popularity of certain delegates, full schedules and exact requests are not guaranteed. You are able to add or rearrange meetings after your schedule has been delivered through Summit Connections.
*PLEASE do not contact the ATTA to make changes or request appointments once your schedule has been delivered. It is your responsibility to make changes after that point.
Can I make changes to my Marketplace schedule once it’s been delivered?
Absolutely! Again, Summit Connections will be your best tool in making any change to your Marketplace schedule.
How can I meet people without participating in Marketplace?
The Summit is developed for networking throughout the entire event — Marketplace is just one of many ways to connect. Dedicated networking/coffee breaks and the Day of Adventure are great ways to connect with other delegates. Registered delegates may use the networking website (Summit Connections) for pre-event networking, knowledge-sharing, and appointment scheduling at the event. There will be a dedicated MEET ME HERE location to help delegates find each other. Connecting with fellow delegates will also take place during lunches, at the partner networking tables, and during the concurrent sessions as well.
