Traveler Information

Sweden is a country close to the earth: Unspoiled natural spaces, a laid-back lifestyle, authentic experiences, and simple, quiet moments. Tucked in West Sweden, Gothenburg embraces this down-to-earth vibe with a rich variety of nature and culture in a mini-metropolis situated by the ocean. Explore the green city’s parks, gardens, and historic castles, then head out for a day of hiking, cycling, sea kayaking, or canoeing. With rocky coastlines dotted with picturesque villages and open fields, vast forests, and countless serene lakes, travelers have a vast array of options for getting back to nature. For more information, please go to Visit Sweden’s and West Sweden’s websites.

Summit Venue

The Adventure Travel World Summit (ATWS) will take place at the centrally located Clarion Hotel Post in Gothenburg.

The hotel is part of the Nordic Choice brand. With 16,000 employees and almost 200 hotels, the Nordic Choice has a massive influence through its operations. It works hard to make the planet a better place through its sustainability work, both by improving its own operations and by being a leader for other hotel companies around the globe. Beginning 1 April 2019, Clarion Hotel Post will have climate-smart conferences, which means it will rely on energy consumption, serve 100 percent plant-based food, use a mulcher, and continue to offer a “sweet stay” option, allowing guests to choose whether to have their rooms cleaned if they stay more than one night.

Getting to Gothenburg

By Train

SJ, Västtrafik, Öresundståget, Tågab, NSB, and MTR Express are running frequent services to and from the central station in Gothenburg, connecting the city with the Scandinavian capitals Stockholm, Oslo, and Copenhagen. The journey times are around 3 hours from Stockholm, just under 4 hours from Oslo, and 3.5 hours from Copenhagen. The trains from Denmark stop at Copenhagen’s international airport, making it a convenient option for travelers who want to fly there and catch the train to Gothenburg.

By Bus

The bus terminal Nils Ericson Terminalen is serviced by long-distance and express bus companies like Swebus, Nettbus, and Bus4you. You can easily travel to Gothenburg from major cities in Sweden and throughout Scandinavia. The journey time is around 3.5 hours from Oslo, 6.5 hours from Stockholm, 3.5 hours from Malmö, and 5 hours from Copenhagen. Travel by bus in West Sweden with public transport company Västtrafik.

By Air

Landvetter (GOT), the international airport, is located 20 kilometers southeast of the city center and offers connections from various destinations in Europe and around the world.

Official Air Booking Desk

The ATTA’s official air booking desk is Exito Travel. Registered delegates are eligible for Exito’s exclusive discounts on flights to Sweden. An Exito agent will be available on-site during the Summit to assist Exito customers as needed.

For discount information and a custom quote, call 800-655-4053, or click here.

Sustainable Transportation

It is easy to get to and from the airport with the shuttle bus service Flygbussarna, and the journey time is just under 30 minutes. Buses leave from right outside the terminal building, and the final stop is the main bus station Nils Ericson Terminalen in central Gothenburg. It is a 4-minute walk from Nils Ericson Terminalen to the venue for the Summit, the Clarion Hotel Post. Visit Sweden and West Sweden highly recommend using this way of transfer as it is the most sustainable way which does not require additional transportation.

All ATWS delegates are invited to enjoy one of many Pre-Summit Adventures for the discounted rate offered by the tour operator.

Day of Adventures

ATTA’s Climate Action Strategic Initiative

The ATTA values include a responsibility to minimize travel’s negative impacts and maximize its positive benefits to the environment in its business operations. As an organization that manages global events; education and training; and destination promotion – all of which require significant worldwide travel by staff and industry members – the ATTA recognizes the need to manage our impact on the environment, and the opportunity we have to lead by example. The ATTA is following a Measure, Mitigate, Educate, and Reduce strategy and will partner with industry leaders to understand its total impact and the possibilities to effectively reduce that impact.

Since 2016 the ATTA has offset the carbon emissions of the Adventure Travel World Summit. In 2018 we increased our commitment by offsetting all delegate travel to ATWS Tuscany and all ATTA staff travel for the year. In 2019 we will offset the impacts of AdventureELEVATE, ATWS and all ATTA staff travel for the year. Our intention is to offset all ATTA events and staff travel by 2020.

We recognize we can go further and the are committed to using our experience to educate this expanding industry and act as a facilitator for travel industry members and destinations who are interested in reducing their carbon emissions through our Climate Action Strategic Initiative. This initiative is providing travel companies with climate action education and research along with strategies and practical tools.

Learn more of what Sweden is doing on Climate Action
Travelandclimate.org is a modified version of a digital platform which was originally designed in 2017-18 as part of a development programme in West Sweden – klimatsmartsemester.se (climate smart vacation). The idea behind the platform is to provide a simple explanation of the climate consequences of different trips. This version is largely tailored to European conditions and travelling in general – not just vacationing. The aim with the platform is to contribute to making travel more sustainable by providing a simple tool and knowledge base which makes it easier for people to choose to travel with a low climate impact.

Guest Program

Due to its potential to sell out, the Summit has limited guest passes. Please contact the ATWS Events Team for prices and availability.

Practical Information

Weather

The weather in Gothenburg for the month of September is mild and lovely with the average high temperature in the 60s°F/15°C and lows in the 50s°F/10°C. It is best to wear layers and bring a light coat.

Attire

As with all Adventure Travel World Summit events, the attire is “adventure casual.” This generally means jeans or pants with a shirt or fleece, and on occasion you may see a sport jacket or very casual dress. An additional warmer jacket or sweater is recommended.

Connectivity

Sweden uses the Europlug (Type C & F) for electricity, which has two round prongs and puts out 230 volts of power in Sweden.

Please check with the hotel you will be staying at for additional information on internet connectivity.

Travel Protection & Emergency Evacuation

Important notice: The ATTA highly recommends that all Summit delegates purchase travel insurance to provide the level of protection and support you require during your involvement at ATWS and during Pre-Summit Adventures and Day of Adventure activities. The ATTA encourages delegates to consider purchasing travel insurance with ATTA’s travel insurance partners, World Nomads or Ripcord – powered by Redpoint. Additional ATTA travel insurance and safety/medical member providers include AIG and Global Rescue.

Sweden has arranged for other entities to provide indoor and outdoor activities for Summit delegates. By choosing to participate in a Pre-Summit Adventure and/or Day of Adventure tour, you recognize that neither the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA), nor its agents, servants, employees, and/or officers, are in any way responsible for any activities conducted by other entities. You further agree to release and discharge the ATTA and its agents, servants, employees, and/or officers from any claim relating to either the selection of the other entities or the suitability of the entity to provide the indoor or outdoor activity. You recognize and understand that the safety laws, regulations, and requirements for any indoor or outdoor activity may vary widely from your home country’s similar laws, regulations, and requirements. You also understand that medical care in this destination may differ from your home country and you agree to release and discharge the ATTA and its agents, servants, employees, and/or officers from any claim relating to medical services.
